Bill is a diorama builder in Snoqualmie, WA. He writes that he builds military-themed dioramas from the perspective of a line soldier, a viewpoint earned from his own time serving as a U.S. Army Infantryman in the ’80s. “When building a diorama, I don’t think of it in miniature, I think of myself as being miniature moving through it as I build.  As an example, in ‘Rommel’s Fuel Dump,’ I just imagined being a driver for the general, and my job was to set up a camp in the deserts of North Africa. I also think about Dioramas like a movie set. Composition, lighting, perspective; these factors are all the result of my fascination with movie making. The first making-of feature I saw was for the movie Silent Running with Bruce Dern at the age of 9. The movie featured small service robots that walked on two legs, but were actually actors inside the robots who did not have legs, walking with their hands. I found it incredible, and was hooked on what was then called, Movie Magic.” Bill is a proud member of IPMS-Seattle, and NWSM (Northwest Scale Modelers), where he is continuously inspired by their immense talent and infectious enthusiasm for modeling. While none of the pieces featured here are, technically speaking, box dioramas, there are many box-like elements to them, so we share them for you to enjoy!
