Born in Belgium, Alain has lived in Sydney, Australia for more than two decades now. He runs his own café and says he makes dioramas as “a creative outlet that I enjoy. I use to play drums in various bands of different music genres, and have always been drawing since I’m a kid—comic strips and other things. I collect a bit of Matchbox cars and Star Wars items, along with the dioramas, and I just want to leave something joyful, with a bit of history, for my grand kids, one day.” He calls his dioramas “mini-movies,” and most are approximately 1/73 scale. The medium is a cheap wooden box frame to which I nail a wooden base so they can be hung on a wall. Most of them are inspired by B-movies of the ’50s and ’60s, some directly (The Blob), some wholly original (Antartika), I like to have fun with it, and hope to share with people that little childhood moment of simple enjoyment. Once, my daughter asked me why are there always monsters in my dioramas? So I said: “Well, don’t mess with nature, don’t pollute oceans, decimate forests, or some creature will show up and be very angry and deal with it, right?”  She said, “Ah, yeah!” Kids get it.
