Of this box, which Gerard displayed only once at the MMSI Chicago Show in the late seventies, Gerard writes, “It had two windows. From the front, you look down a western street at night; the bad guys are leaving the bank they’ve just robbed on the left and the ruckus is flushing observers from the saloon on the right (named the Ruby Gulch Saloon in tribute to a U of I watering hole in Champaign). Through the side window of the box on the left, you see the inside of the bank, where the wounded clerk (an Airfix footballer) is reaching for something on a desk. The figures were mostly Airfix or Marx cowboys; the bucking horse is from the 54mm Airfix kit. The buildings were scratchbuilt. The roll top desk was probably from Marx.  I made a safe by taking an HO circus wagon, painting it black, giving it a door, and putting it on its side.  The bank inside was wall-papered, and the lighting was probably grain of wheat bulbs inside both buildings so that the only light in the street was spilled out from the buildings. It was fun to do and  generated what I consider the greatest compliment in my 50+ years of building and displaying pieces.  I overheard two kids probably about 12 looking at my diorama and one said to the other, ‘Tough!’”
