Richard lives in Cape Town, South Africa, and is a service manager for a telecommunications company. He writes that he was introduced to building model aircraft by his dad at the early age of 9, but it was only in 1984 that he built his first model, a ship’s cannon, using wood and brass. He then went on to build scale wagons (using wood and metal), a few wooden ship kits, and eventually ended up in the world of plastic scale models. He tried various genres, but soon gravitated to dioramas, liking the opportunity for detail and realism that they offered. His favourite scales are 1/12 and 1/24 and he scratchbuilds most of the items he needs. In early 2020, he discovered Shep Paine’s work and decided to try his hand at a shadowbox diorama. That piece, “The Abandoned Nieuport,” seen here, is in 1/32nd scale. He adds that his next diorama will “be more detailed and also have more lighting effects.” That’s what we love to hear—another modeler hooked!
