Fostering Creativity in the Hobby

At the MMSI Chicago Show in 2012, Jim DeRogatis, one of this site’s co-hosts, moderated a panel discussion entitled “Fostering Creativity in the Hobby” featuring master modelers Sheperd Paine, Joe Berton, and Fletcher Clement. The topic was by no means restricted to box dioramas; in fact, these artists’ comments are hugely informative and inspiring to to everyone from painters of stock figures to sculptors to diorama makers. The video was shot by MMSI club member Felix Gonzales; enjoy!

Dioramas from the Museum of Natural History, New York

It was this site's co-founder Darryl Audette who taught me that we can learn a lot as miniature diorama-builders from the great life-size naturalist dioramas, and they don't get any better than those at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. This video is by Peter Mangiaracina. There also is a great book about these dioramas that Darryl brought to our attention, by Stephen Christopher Quinn: Windows on Nature: The Great Habitat Dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History.
